THIS MONTH IN

In this monthly article I take a look at the current North American issue of Games Workshop's White Dwarf and give you the details on what Warhammer-related material is offered as well as my impressions of it.  Any opinions expressed are solely my own.

WHITE DWARF #294 JULY 2004

The Storm of Chaos campaign is now in full swing.   As expected, much of this issue deals with content related in some way to this summer global campaign.

Tactica: Halting the Tide:

Phil Kelly, the writer of the Archaon’s Horde Army List, gives tactics on how to defeat this army.  Especially helpful are the tactics, supported with diagrams, on how to win the Archaon’s Horde special scenario associated with this army when it is led by Archaon or Crom the Conqueror.  Also included are tips on how to deal with Archaon himself, which I’m sure will be appreciated by many a player.

Warhammer Chronicles: Campaign Injuries and Experience, Presented by Gav Thorpe:

Gav Thorpe presents rules written by Dylan Owen, who has been running a map-based campaign at the Games Workshop for some time, for how to add injuries and experience to your campaigns.  Included are various tables and even a character sheet to keep track of your character’s important data.

Dueling Hellcannons: Two Painters take on the New Chaos Dwarf War Machine:

The Chaos Hellcannon is one of the most detailed pieces in the game of Warhammer.  It’s not only a challenge to put together, but it’s also a challenge to paint.  In this article you will find a great deal of tips that will help with both of those issues.  Every step from constructing the model to tips on painting the model are included.  As you would expect, there are many incredible illustrations that support the article and two different paint schemes for this amazing model are shown.

Shaggoth: A Storm of Chaos Painting Showcase:

This two page article is, as the article subheading states, a showcase.  Four different amazingly painted Shaggoth models are shown with great front and back pictures as well as smaller images showcasing some of the details.  If you have a Shaggoth and are looking for painting or modeling ideas, check it out.

Modeling Workshop: Adding Character and Interest to your Siege Towers – Part 3:

This is the third installment in a series of articles showcasing unique approaches to making themed siege towers.  Chris Walton and Steve Stiefel show you how to build siege towers dedicated to the Chaos gods of Tzeentch and Slaanesh.  Not only are there instructions, with supporting illustrations along the way, for how to construct these towers but there are also special rules, stat lines and point values for using them in your siege games.

Mustering the Hordes: Adapting Existing Armies to Conform to the Lists in the Storm of Chaos Campaign Sourcebook:

In this second part of a two part series of articles, five Storm of Chaos sample armies with illustrations of important units and pieces are exhibited.  The lists presented here are the Army of Sylvania , Archaon’s Horde, Army of Middenland, High Elf Sea Patrol and the Bretonnian Errantry War.  The full composition of each army is given as well as some thoughts on how the army was constructed.

Modeling Workshop: Malakai Makaisson’s Goblin-Hewer:

This article gives advice on constructing the Goblin-Hewer model.  What’s unique about this article is that two Dwarven characters, Malakai and Sven Grimgut, are used to ‘talk you through’ the process.  It adds ‘character’ to an otherwise standard (although useful if you have one of these models to put together) article.

 Daemon Chariots:

This article showcases four converted chariots, one for each of the Chaos gods, for the Storm of Chaos Daemonic Legions army list.  Included are fantastic illustrations and, what is sure to be extremely helpful to anybody thinking of pulling one of these off, a full component list including item numbers to make getting all of the necessary pieces much easier.

Storm of Chaos Events: The Storm is Upon Us, and It’s Time to Throw in your Lot !:

This is basically a list of special Games Workshop events related to this summer’s Storm of Chaos worldwide campaign.

Destroy the Gunpowder Supplies: An Example of a Special Event for the Storm of Chaos Campaign:

One of the summer’s Games Workshop special events for the Storm of Chaos campaign, “Destroy the Gunpowder Supplies”, is the subject of this article.  Event information is given.  Whether or not you have interest in attending one of these events, a mini-article on how to construct a “Powder House” are given.  Step by step instructions with illustrations along the way are given.  This could be useful for terrain hobbyists

Battle Report: A Glorious Death:

Garagrim Ironfist’s Slayers, a Dwarven Slayer army played by Gav Thorpe, faces off against Grimgore’s ‘Ardboyz played by Gordon Davidson in a battle report.  Gav Thorpe’s Scenario Generator was used for this battle.

From Concept to Reality: Painting an Empire Semaphore Tower :

The final part of this three article series, written by Steve Cumiskey, this article explains how to paint the Empire Semaphore Tower terrain piece.  Of course, illustrations guide you through the process.
