ARTICLE

THIS MONTH IN

In this monthly article I take a look at the current North American issue of Games Workshop's White Dwarf and give you the details on what Warhammer-related material is offered as well as my impressions of it.  Any opinions expressed are solely my own.

WHITE DWARF #290 MARCH 2004

This issue continues on with last month's "high seas" theme.

Call of the High Seas: Creatures and Features of the Ocean:  This article expands on the Warhammer naval articles by addressing things other than the ships themselves.  There are pictures, rules and statistics for several "sea monsters" that can be used to spice up your naval battles.  There are also step by step guides (with pictures at each step) to making an island group terrain feature as well as a "wave" piece.  The wave piece is used to represent really big waves that may affect your vessels.  Rules for playing with these waves are provided within the article.

Nautilus: Steam-Powered Submersible: Gaming with Dwarf Submarines in Warhammer: This article deals with Dwarven submersibles. Provided are all the rules needed to add this vessel type to your naval battles as well as several good illustrations of Games Workshop's model.  A small insert on the first page briefly describes how Games Workshop designed and built their submersible.  A small illustration of the model in its unfinished state is provided to give you a better idea of how it was constructed.

High Seas Showcase: Fantastic Vessels from US Gamers:  This article is a showcase of ships built by the Games Workshop US staff and fans.  The illustrations provided are truly inspirational  and the ships look unbelievably good.  The article describes some of the finer details of each ship with smaller sub-images to support each point.  Also provided are some of the construction secrets for the vessels.  If you are looking into building your own ships for Warhammer naval battles this article should prove extremely useful.

Battle Report: Chaos Invasion by Sea: This is the first of two Warhammer naval battle reports in this issue.  In this report the Chaos forces, with some sea monsters thrown in, must make an amphibious landing and burn a fishing village that the Empire player must protect.  Once again the photos in the battle report are outstanding and truly make Warhammer naval battles seem extremely enticing.

Battle Report: The Guns of Karak Navarone:  In this Warhammer naval battle report Skaven privateers have allied with Orc and Goblin pirates and together  they must attack and destroy a Dwarven seaside gun emplacement.  The greenskins and Skaven must make their way past the Dwarven defenses and establish a beachhead in order to destroy the Dwarven stronghold.   Once again the pictures are a sight to behold.

Lord Mazdamundi: Building Your Own Special Character:  This article, written by Andy Hoare, shows how you can take the background for a character mentioned in an army book, turn that background into a cool model and then create a set of rules for using him in your battles.  These rules are experimental (must have your opponent's permission to use and are not tournament legal).  The article takes you through the process Andy went through in making this character from modeling and converting, painting and basing.  Provided are full rules for this character if you want to use him in any of your games, with your opponent's permission of course.

Olde Weirde’s Incunabulum:  An essay looking at the Battle of the Old Forest Road and musings on Sylvania and its denizens: This article is obviously another build-up for the upcoming Storm of Chaos campaign, this time dealing with the Vampire Counts of Sylvania.  Provided is a lot of fluff about past Sylvanian battles as well as illustrations showing how various Sylvanian units looked "in life".   If you are building a Vampire Counts army these illustrations may give you conversion and paint scheme ideas.

Bretonnian Timeline: Written by Anthony Reynolds this is simply a timeline of the history of Bretonnia.  If you are really into the fluff of the Warhammer world this article gives you all of the dates that major events happened within or involving Bretonnia.

Scenery Workshop: Building a Bretonnian Hovel:  Seve Cumiskey provides a step by step guide, with materials lists and illustrations, on how to build your own Bretonnian hovel terrain piece.  This article shows you everything from gathering the materials to building the model to painting and finishing touches.

Painting Masterclass: King Louen Leoncoeur:  Matt Parkes, a multiple UK Golden Demon award winner, discusses how he went about painting his special character King Louen Leoncoeur riding a Hyppogryph.  Many painting tips, complete with supporting illustrations, show you how he achieved the fine details in this gorgeous model.  Even if you don't play Bretonnia you may want to read this article if you want painting tips to add to your repertoire.

The Eye of Terror Redux, Part 1 (Warhammer 40,000): This is an article showing some of the finer details behind how the Eye of Terror worldwide campaign that took place last year worked.  If you are interested in getting ideas for setting up campaigns for your battles this article may be very interesting to you as many of its principles can likely be directly modified to a fantasy setting. This is a multi part article.  Next month they will provide the "event cards" that were used in the campaign as well as other special rules.  If you are looking for insight into how the upcoming Storm of Chaos worldwide campaign could work these articles are very interesting indeed.
