WHITE
DWARF #289 FEBRUARY 2004
Once
again the new Bretonnia army dominates much of the
Warhammer-related articles featured in White Dwarf, but there are
some other interesting things as well. Collecting
Bretonnians: In this article Adi McWalter gives his thoughts
on constructing a new Bretonnian army now that the army has been
officially released for sixth edition. He starts by choosing
a theme and then takes us through the character, item and unit
selection process all while giving us his reasoning for each
decision. Dragonquest:
A Bretonnian Scenario: This is a 2-6 player scenario /
mini-game by Gav Thorpe where a group of Bretonnians face off
against a Dragon. All of the rules needed to play are given
including counters (on the page that you can cut-out or photocopy)
that you use to determine the Dragon's actions. Bretonnian
Trebuchet: From Concept to Realization: Martin Footit, who
finished designing the model, explains how the design process went
from start to finish. Also included are some helpful tips on
putting the Trebuchet model together and two pages about his
firing Trebuchet conversion that he entered in the Open
Competition at this year's UK Games Day. The article has
wonderful illustrations throughout and even a few interesting
concept-art drawings. Painting
Workshop: Bretonnian Men-at-Arms Batch Painting: Dave McCurdy
gives a step-by-step guide, including illustrations for each step,
on how he batch painted a unit of Men-at-Arms. Even if you
don't play Bretonnia this article could be helpful if you are
interested in painting techniques. Call
of the High Seas: Using Boat Rules in the Warhammer World:
This article expands on the rules for using boats in your
Warhammer games that were given in The General's Compendium.
This series of articles (several in this issue and more to come
next issue) is for advanced gamers as it adds new rules to the
game and requires that you build the ships. This article is
basically a four page introduction to the series of articles to
follow and has some exceptional (inspiring!) pictures of different
ships and play-settings. Ship
Building: Constructing a Basic Ship: This article is
pretty self-explanatory. It takes you through the process of
building a basic ship. There are step-by-step instructions
with illustrations at every step as well as materials lists.
If you are interested in adding high-seas action to your games and
want to build a ship this article couldn't help you more without
the author coming down to your house to construct it for you. Iron
Clad! Dwarf Steam & Iron Might: Building & Gaming with
Dwarf Ships in Warhammer: This article adds rules for using
Dwarven Ironclad ships in your high-seas games as well as
step-by-step instructions (again with illustrations for each step)
on how to construct one. Olde
Weirde's Incunabulum: Being a Discourse about the Warrior Tribes
of the North-East: This is a fluff article about the warrior
tribes of the north-east who worship Chaos. This article is
undoubtedly related to the upcoming summer campaign "Storm of
Chaos". Included are hand-drawn illustrations of Chaos
Warriors from this region as well as different weapons and
equipment that they use. The
Hammer and the Anvil: A discussion of Dwarf Tactics:
Written by Jay Browning this article is about different tactics
for Dwarf players. Great illustrations and diagrams are
included. The
Chaos Below: This article is written by both Ant Reynolds and
Phil Kelly and it is a set-up article for the upcoming "Storm
of Chaos" summer campaign. This article details what
Throt the Unclean is up to as the campaign approaches and reveals
that the Skaven of Clan Moulder have formed an alliance with
Archaon and how it came to pass. There is also an excellent
fluff-story about Throt's torturous mutations.
The full rules for Throt the Unclean are given again. I don't know
if or how they differ from the ones already in the Skaven book but
there is probably some difference to warrant a re-printing even if
those differences are minor. Race
Against the Dead: A Warhammer Battle Report: This month Andy
Smith's Dwarves take on Warhammer Grand Champion Geoff Porritt's
Vampire horde. What's different about this report is that
the players decided to make things more interesting by designing a
scenario about how the Vampire Counts armies came to possess the
Book of Arkhan and the Cursed Book, two of the most popular items
int the Vampire Counts army book. The battle report, as
usual, is full of amazing pictures of both armies and of the game
at different points. If you are a Vampire Counts fan or are
a mini-conversion maniac you really need to check out Geoff's
army. It's...interesting to say the least. |
