I am just finishing up making a table to battle on. It was really easy and I thought I would share it.

This table top is almost identical to the ones sold on www.warzone.com for about $100.00 US. Mine was less than $20.00. Plus, I made it.

Materials you will need:
  • 2 sheets of 1 1/2 inch insulating foam board. Cost approx. $8.00 US
  • 1 roll of duct tape. Cost approx. $3.00 US
  • Brown acrylic paint (the cheap stuff). Cost approx. $1.00 US
  • Lots of flock. Cost approx. $4.00 US
  • White glue. Cost approx. $1.00 US

Total Cost: Approx. $17.00 US

These are all estimated costs. I didn’t have to buy Duct tape, white glue or flock. Foam insulating board (Pink Foam) may be hard to come by overseas, I really don’t know. It is used extensively in the US for building insulation and comes in sheets that are 2 feet by 8 feet by whatever thickness you want from ½ inch to 3 inches I think. It is great for building terrain out of. Look for it in do-it-yourself (DIY) or home improvement stores. I got mine at Home Depot. This project will net you a 2’x4’ piece left over for terrain building and a table top that is 4’x 6’.

Step 1: Prep the Boards

Using a razor knife or Hot Knife and a metal straight edge, cut the sheets of foam board in half making 4 sheets that are 2’ x 4’.There is usually a lip on the sides of the foam board allowing it to fit tight with other boards. You don’t need this so cut it off too.

Here is a picture of the 2' by 4' foam insulating board.

Here is a picture of the lip that will need to be cut off.

When you are through you should have 4 2’x4’ rectangles of pink foam (or Blue, it comes in Blue too).

Step 2: Assembly

Lay two pieces of foam side to side along the 4’edge. Tape them together with duct tape running the 4’length of the boards. I used 3 overlapping strips of tape: one over the seam between the boards and one over each side of the first piece of tape.

Flip the two boards over, and place the third next to the first two and tape as in step 2, but on the reverse of the first tape. This is important as it won’t fold right if you have the tape on the same side. At this point you can add the fourth board or keep it aside for terrain purposes (I am using mine for terrain).

Step 4: Paint

Now you need to ensure that the board with the open seam on top doesn’t get stuck to the rest of the board when you paint. Either stick something under the tape so it stays open a bit, or put some cardboard or paper in the seam to keep the two edges apart. I recommend the first because it will make life easier through the rest of the process.

You should keep the seam apart to prevent sticking.

Paint the boards and edges brown (or whatever color you want….I am using brown, it looks good under the flock). Let it dry completely before moving on.

Step 5: Flock

Thin some white glue (see My mini basing article) and paint it on the boards (You have a 24 ft area to cover so you’ll need a bit of glue). Then cover the glue with flock. This can be a bit tricky, as the glue may dry before you can get great coverage. Work quickly and don’t worry, you can fix it later. Let it dry completely before moving on.

Step 6: Seal it

Thin some more white glue. Pour it into a spray bottle (I suppose you could dab it on like the minis but it may take a really long time, and you will probably pull up a lot of flock). Spray the flocked board wit the glue mixture until they are wet all over and add some more flock to the bare patches you might have. Let it dry.

Step 7: Wage War!

This table top is ready to go!!!

Here is a picture of the finished table-top while it was drying.

It now folds up, accordion style, to store in a closet or what ever, its VERY light so you can move it around to different spots to play, looks pretty sharp.…what more could you ask for? If you try it or you have any questions give me a personal message (PM) in the Warpath Forums and I’ll help if I can.
